Workshop Overview
This interactive workshop will take place via Zoom on December 1st, 2026 from 10am – 12pm.
This workshop introduces participants to the core principles and behaviours that enable a voluntary board to lead with clarity, purpose, and strategic discipline. Training topics are designed to reflect the fact that volunteer‑driven organisations operate with unique dynamics that differ significantly from corporate or statutory boards. Board members are often motivated by passion rather than position, and they may bring diverse levels of experience, confidence, and governance knowledge. Leading volunteers requires high emotional intelligence, strong communication, and the ability to build trust across varied stakeholders.

This workshop is designed for voluntary board chairpersons, board directors, charity trustees and senior managers. Training topics may also be of benefit to community and voluntary organisations who wish to build leadership capacity.
Workshop Content:
Training begins by exploring strategic board oversight and a range of leadership perspectives, helping board members distinguish leadership versus management and understand how different levels of leadership—including the concept of 5th level leaders—shape board effectiveness. Participants also examine the role of emotional intelligence and essential leadership skills in navigating the unique dynamics of volunteer‑driven governance.
Participants explore the stages of team development, what it takes to develop a high‑performance board, and how to build a mission‑focused board culture supported by effective behavioural norms.
