  • Explain the importance of keywords and headings, video and audio elements, lists and links, forms and messages in website design
  • Explain the importance of search engine optimisation in web design

Target Audience

This course is designed for participants who hold marketing or communications roles in businesses or non-profit organisations e.g. Committee PRO, general administrator, centre co-ordinator, small business owner, marketing communications officer.

Course Structure

The course is divided into twelve component parts and takes approximately 3 hours to review. Practical templates (worksheets) are provided with course topics. Participants should allow for additional time to fully complete the practical work associated with the course. Topics are self-contained to facilitate micro-learning for the time conscious participant.

Lesson 1: Content Purpose and Search Engine Optimisation

The purpose of a website influences a wide range of development decisions including web page layout, selection of text copy and images and web page interactivity options. Websites may do more than provide information about an organisation’s goods and services. They can frequently have a functional role, such as handling online purchases or providing customer account and invoicing details.

 Lesson 2: Keywords and Headings

The words we use in our website text are important, as they enable people to find our content online.

Lesson 3: Visual and Audio

Not all content on a website comprises of text. Images, video and audio really enhance a web site and help make web pages stand out for visitors. Used in conjunction with text, all three media can reinforce the points being made.

Lesson 4: Lists and Links

Lists help a web page visitor to quickly read key points in a block of content. Lists also make use of white space to help draw the eye of the visitor to the content where the list is positioned on the page. Content links help to guide web page visitors to related pieces of information or pages of content of interest to them.

Lesson 5: Forms and Messages

It is likely that you may wish to include a form on your website, such as a ‘Sign Up’ form or ‘Contact Us’ form.

Lesson 6: Web page Layout and Grids

The layout of a web page is important. If a page contains too much information and elements, then it may feel ‘cluttered’ to the web site user. As a general rule, you should plan to have one topic per web page.

Lesson 7: Creating a Style Guide

A website style guide provides web designers with a set of ‘rules’ to follow. These rules help to ensure that each element of a website (and web page) is presented in a consistent fashion throughout the site. A style guide is particularly helpful to develop when several people are providing content for a website project. A guide is also helpful to have when you want your website to clearly reflect the visual representations of your company brand.

Lesson 8: Reviewing Content

Make sure that you review all the content you have mapped out for each web site page before you build the website structure and start inputting text, audio and visuals.

Lesson 9: Keeping Content Up-to-date

Building a new website is an exciting development in any organisation. But to ensure that you get the maximum benefit from your new online resource, it is important to plan in advance how and who will keep your website updated once it goes live.

Lesson 10: Build a Website Step-by-Step

If you would like to learn how to build a website, we suggest that you create your website on the Weebly platform. To assist you in this task, we have developed a step-by-step guide that takes you through the process from registering for a free Weebly account through to building each element of a website. The video guides and instructions will assist you, as progress through building each of the pages on your website.

Lesson 11:  Prepare a Website Design Brief for a Developer

The more information you can provide in a web design brief, the more accurately web designers can quote for the project. Thinking through your requirements in advance, will also help to get the website build off to a good start, as both you and the developer are more likely to be ‘on the same page’ so to speak!
