Overview

Structured as a practical and instructive 7.5 hours long eLearning course, the Governance and Charities Governance Code course and resource site provides you with a step-by-step approach to implementing  appropriate standards of good governance in your non-profit organisation.

Completing the Course

It is recommended that you complete each lesson in turn. The first six lessons consider each of the six principles of the Charities Governance Code. Lessons 7 and 8 provide you with an overview of the roles and responsibilities of charity trustees who sit on the boards of companies limited by guarantee. Lesson 9 lists the steps involved in the Charities Governance Code compliance reporting process. The final lesson provides you with easy access to the templates and resources referred to during the course. Upon completion of lesson 10, you will have an opportunity to complete the short Course Quiz and download a Certificate of Completion upon successful completion of the quiz.

It should be noted that the templates and resources that accompany this course are designed specifically for companies limited by guarantee. As a result, the term ‘board member’ is used interchangeably with that of ‘charity trustee’. Once Lesson 10 has been accessed, you may login into the course at any time thereafter and click on the Templates and Resources lesson title in the Associated Content panel to go directly to the Lesson 10 resources page.

Charity Type

The Charities Regulator expects all charities to meet all of the core standards that are outlined in the six principles of the Charities Governance Code. In addition, more complex organisations will be required to meet both core standards and an additional set of standards. Each charity will have to decide itself whether the charity should meet additional standards. Factors that will influence this decision include:

  • the charity’s income;
  • the number of employees; and
  • the complexity of activities e.g. number of volunteers, operating overseas, large volume of volunteers.

Target Audience

This course is designed for social enterprises that are registered or intend to register as charities. It provides an easy-to-follow guide for board members, charity trustees, managers and volunteers tasked with implementing good governance practices that are compliant with the Charities Governance Code.

The course is also designed to help new charity trustees learn about their governance role and responsibilities and may form part of board induction training.

The resources and templates that accompany the course may prove helpful for trustees and managers who do not have a background in corporate governance or policy development.
